Significance of Cash Drawers to Efficacy of POS

Cash drawers offer a safe and organized way to store your business money as you receive from customers. Money may be stored in the drawers in form of bills, notes, coins and cheques. Thus, your point of sale system is incomplete without a properly functioning drawer for cash.

Drawers where your business money is temporarily kept come in a variety of types. Some are connected to the POS system through a computer’s serial port while others take direct commands from the receipt printer. It is, therefore, prudent to examine all the devices in your system to ascertain compatibility with your drawer.

The compatibility issue is very important here because the devices we are talking about are critical to the entire POS system. Thus, the incompatible device is the weakest link in the whole chain and can collapse or halt POS functionalities, translating into losses for your business.

If the drawer fits in well, then think about safety of money or other valuables to be kept inside. How does the drawer open? If it cannot connect to the POS system, then you have another weak link in the system. If you are using such a device, you may want to replace it with a digital one that opens only when it is necessary (that is when the receipt printer or CPU in the POS sends a command to that effect).

Label printers too contribute significantly to a POS. They create labels and barcodes that can be read by scanners. Quality of output of these printers is an overriding factor to a number of considerations. Your labels should not only last but also speak volumes about your organization. Bad quality print results into contempt of your products or services, which is actually bad business. Therefore, go for brands of label printers with a good reputation in the business of printing labels.
